On a cloudy autumn Saturday afternoon at the "G. Karaiskakis" Stadium, Christos Papanikolaou breaks the world record in the pole vault with 5m.49cm. He becomes the first Balkan athlete to set a post-war world record. His record lasts 22 years as a national record and 531 days as a world record! In Greece it was broken by Christos Pallakis in 1992, with 5m.52cm.
