On May 14, 2004, Theodoros Antoniou was awarded the Gottfried von Herder Award (former winners included Andronikos, Babiniotis, Kodai, Pedereski, etc.) at the Ceremonies Hall of the University of Vienna, where his work was performed that same night. This award is bestowed upon artists whose work contributed to the peaceful cultural coexistence of the people of Europe. It is one of the many awards in Theodoros Antoniou's career path, abroad and in Greece. Some 25 awards and distinctions include: The "Richard Strauss Award" of the City of Munich (1964), the "Karolos Koun" Award (1988) for his contribution to theater music, the "Metcalf Teaching Excellence" from Boston University (1991), the award of the Academy of Athens for his collective contribution to music (1997), Honorary Doctor of the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University (2003), Commander of the Order of Honor of the President of the Hellenic Republic (February 2007), Honorary Doctor of the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2009), the award "Honoring Greek Culture" from Harvard University (2011) and the Apollo Prize from the National Opera (2013.) In October 2008, he was named Professor Emeritus of Boston University.
