Intercontinental Cup

Panathinaikos, representing Europe due to Ajax's refusal to participate, plays the first of the doubles matches with Nasional of Montevideo for the Intercontinental Cup in Athens, which ends in 1-1, with goals by Filakouris and Artime. In this match, during a violent foul by Morales, Giannis Tomaras is seriously injured in the leg and is essentially forced to stop playing football. In the rematch of December 29, 1971, in Uruguay, Nasional wins the title, after winning 2-1, the scorers being, again, Artime (2) and Filakouris.
