In 1930, Kostas Skarvelis (1880 – 1942) became Columbia's Greek branch's artistic director. The English Grammophone had established the record factory in Perissos, and Skarvelis is recognized as its first artistic director. From this post, he became one of the most influential agents in selecting material to be recorded and together with Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios), Spyros Peristeris, Panagiotis Tountas, and Ioannis Dragatsis (Odontakis) became the five composers/artistic directors who shaped the contemporary musical style of the urban songs during the interwar period in Greece. Kostas Skarvelis collaborated in discography and on stage with Markos Vamvakaris and other music companies from Peiraeus. In fact, in 1935, he performed in Markos' club in Kokkinia. He played with Markos Vamvakaris, Giorgos Batis, Stratos Pagioumtzis, Sofia Karivali, and Anestos Delis (Artemis).
