The historic café "Despair Street - Georges Baté) opened in the neighborhood of Lemonadika

Batis (George Tsoros 1885 – 1967) opened the historic café "Street of Despair – Georges Baté" in Lemonadika. The café quickly emerged as a cradle of rebetiko. It hosted all of rebetiko's prominent names: Markos Vamvakaris, Anestos Delias, Stratos Pagioumtzis, Bayanteras (Dimitris Gogos), Giannis Papaioannou, Nikos Mathesis (lyricist), and many others such as the poet Napoleon Lapathiotis. Occasionally, various artists from Smyrna performed there, among them, Panagiotis Tountas, Spyros Peristeris, Kostas Skarvelis, Vangelis Papazoglou, Iovan Tsaous (Yiannis Eitziridis), Apostolos Hadzichristos, Ogdontakis (Yiannis Dragatsis).
