Historical rebetiko band, "The FamousTetras of Piraeus," is formed

The first official and legitimate professional Greek band with bouzoukia and baglamades is created with the contribution of Spyros Peristeris. It is the "Famous Tetras of Piraeus," with Markos Vamvakaris (1905 – 1972), Giorgos Batis (1885 – 1967), Stratos Pagioumtzis (1904 – 1971), and Anestis Delias (1912 – 1944). Batis, the oldest among them, came up with the name of the band. The rebetiko band from Smyrna, with Spyros Peristeris, Kostas Nouros, Stellakis Perpiniadis, Giorgos Kavouras, Kostas Agoropoulos, Leontaritis, etc., played at Sarantopoulos' café "Mantra" in Piraeus' Anastasi neighborhood. The band attracted refugees from Asia Minor who enjoyed listening to amanedes and rebetiko songs performed with santurs and violins. Peristeris convinced Sarantopoulos to invite the Piraeus Tetras to play rebetiko songs professionally with bouzoukia and baglamades. In 1934 the Piraeus Tetras defined the decisive change in the urban folk song, laying the foundation for a new genre: the Piraeus Rebetiko. The band's musical style abandoned the oriental lyrical tone and was expressed clearly and detached. The simple, unadorned, and creative verse incorporated the time's cultural traits.
