The idea for the establishment of a Greek Club of Ionia had begun in 1890. At that time, the English, mainly, army men stationed in Smyrna (present-day Izmir) who lived in Bournova, initiated the Greeks to football. They also built a stadium as the headquarters of the "Bournobat Juniors Athletic Association of Smyrna." Until 1904, the Pan-Ionian Games were held in the stadium with many participants from abroad.
