Sports begin to develop in the city from the fertile grounds of the Boy Scouts of Heraklion and the Boys' High School seniors. The idea originated at a sports center on Idomeneos Street, where several sports athletes worked out together. Since then, OFI has been a constant source of energy for Greek sports. In football, the Cretan team holds the informal record of employing the same coach for the longest time with Eugene Gerards, an active coach for 15 years (from 1985 to 2000).
