Stelios Kyriakidis wins the Boston Marathon

The "descendant of Pheidippides" - according to the US media of the time – moves the world when, upon his arrival at the other side of the Atlantic, he declares: "I came to run on behalf of 7 million starving Greeks"! He sells his belongings for the much-desired ticket to the Boston marathon. In the famous marathon, he runs 14 minutes faster than his own record! And he shouts (according to the American LIFE magazine) as he crosses the finish line: "For Greece"! Because of the victory of the Cypriot …superman the Acropolis is illuminated for the first time since the German Occupation. In Athens – despite the ongoing civil war – everyone takes to the streets. They're celebrating! Stelios Kyriakidis is one of the founding members of the Philothei Sports Club (1956.)
