The Greek national basketball team becomes the European Champion

The Greek national basketball team wins the gold medal at the Eurobasket in Athens,  defeating the Soviet Union team 103-101 in the final, with two successful free shots by Argyris Kambouris in the overtime. This triumph marked the beginning of the spring of Greek basketball.  The sport became very popular, and hundreds of talented players emerged from the local basketball clubs, which begun to have an impressive participation in all the major European championships.

In the unforgettable final match, the National team, coached by Politis, played a fantastic game, and every player achieved awesome performance. (Galis scored 40 points and was top scorer of the tournament with 296 points, Fasoulas 12, Giannakis 10, Kambouris 10, Christodoulou 10, Andritsos 10, Ioannou 8, Romanidis 3, Philippou, Stavropoulos, Karatzas and Linardos). With this title, Greece is recognized as a significant power in team sports for the first time at an international level.
