She died at the age of 35 from cancer. She was of Armenian descent; her real name was Evangelia Atamian. She met the acrobat and theater producer Nikos (Nino) Nikolaidis, and in 1944 they started working together as an artistic, acrobatic ensemble named "Duo Nino". Later she met Manolis Chiotis, who introduced her to the discography with the songs I've been looking at You for Hours, and I'll Tell You My Secret. She recorded songs with Papaioannou, Mitsakis, and Tsitsanis, with whom she had the closest and lengthiest collaboration. Ninou's life inspired the scenario for director Costas Ferris' film "Rebetiko." Manos Hatzidakis dedicated his record "Perix" to Ninou and wrote about her: "All this work is dedicated to the memory of the unforgettable Marika Ninou, who, without knowing it, carved on us with the knife of her voice the names of the Gods of humility and the decline of Byzantium."
